Disappointing Result to Study

Scientists at the University of Western Australia have discovered that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin and COX-2 inhibitor pain relievers like Celebrex do not appear to prevent mesothelioma, as they had hoped.

Investigators said that tests on mice and people did not support the theory that NSAIDs and Cox-2 inhibitors would prevent mesothelioma from developing or improve survival, although aspirin did appear to temporarily slow down disease development in mice, in other words the time between asbestos exposure and the first evidence of the disease.

However, disease progression was not affected by the continued taking of the drug.

Alex Strauss, Managing Editor of Surviving Mesothelioma, said it was disappointing news and although inflammation plays a role in mesothelioma development, this study suggests that it will take more than prevention of inflammation to prevent the disease.
